According to Japanese media such as NHK and Mainichi Shimbun on the 5th, the Nuclear Regulation Authority held a regular meeting that day and reached this conclusion. Earlier, the Nuclear Regulation Agency, the secretariat of the regulation authority, sent inspectors to the site from the 28th to the 30th of last month to check for any leaks or abnormalities in the facilities that send contaminated water to the sea, and to verify whether the dilution facilities mixing contaminated water with seawater and the emergency shut-off devices were functioning properly.
In this inspection conducted ahead of the contaminated water discharge planned for this summer, it was judged that there were no problems with the facilities, and it was decided to issue a "(inspection) completion certificate" to Tokyo Electric Power Company, indicating that the facilities passed. Once this certificate is issued, the discharge of contaminated water into the ocean will be possible. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also evaluated in a comprehensive report released the previous day that the Fukushima nuclear power plant's contaminated water ocean discharge plan complies with international safety standards.
