This event highlights the history of the Goryeo palace Kaesong Manwoldae, as well as the excavation process and achievements conducted jointly by the South and North. Founded in 918, Goryeo established Kaesong as its capital and built a new palace, which was burned down in 1361 during the invasion of the Hong Geon-jeok. The site of the former Goryeo palace, left as an empty lot, was later named "Manwoldae" and has been passed down to the present day.
The prior joint excavation between South and North Korea was conducted from May 2007 to 2018, investigating about 19,770㎡, approximately 60% of the previously unexcavated 33,000㎡ western architectural complex. The excavation yielded over 17,900 artifacts, including one metal movable type and various types of roof tiles and ceramics.
The Lotte World Folk Museum plans to vividly convey the history of Goryeo and Manwoldae, as well as the excavation process of Kaesong Manwoldae, by digitally processing photos, maps, artifacts, and records. In the experience zone, visitors will also have the opportunity to touch major artifacts excavated from Manwoldae, replicated using 3D printing technology.
From July 24th to August 26th, a hands-on program titled "From Excavation to Exhibition," linked to the special exhibition, will be offered for elementary school students on summer vacation, allowing them to experience artifact excavation and restoration.
