'Daegu Palgeosan Fortress' to be Managed as a Historic Site
Key Strategic Site Defending the West Axis of Silla Royal Capital
"Outstanding Historical Value Due to Unique Fortification Style"
The 'Daegu Palgeosan Fortress,' presumed to be a military stronghold from the Silla period, will be managed as a nationally designated cultural heritage site. The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 27th that it was designated as a historic site following a review by the Cultural Heritage Committee. It is a defensive system constructed at the summit of Hamjisan on the north side of the Geumho River. According to historical records such as the "Samguk Sagi," "Sejong Sillok Jiriji," and "Yeojidoseo," its old name was Dokmoseong. It offers a panoramic view of the southern Daegu basin, the Geumho River, and the intersection of Yeongnam-daero, a major transportation route in the past. Due to its geographical characteristics, it is presumed to have been a strategic point responsible for the westward defense axis of the Silla royal capital.
Inside, a hyeonmun (縣門)-style gate structure and goksung (曲城) are confirmed. Both are typical construction styles of mountain fortresses from the Silla period. Hyeonmun refers to a gate built high enough to be accessible only by climbing a ladder, and goksung are rounded protrusions built intermittently outside the fortress walls. The Cultural Heritage Administration explained, "The gentle slope of the fortress walls, the unique construction method at the junctions of the goksung and walls, and other distinctive building techniques give it outstanding historical value."

Sixteen wooden tablets excavated from a wooden water collection site (jipsuji, 集水地) are also important materials for studying local history of the Silla period. A jipsuji is a space designed to store flowing or rainwater for use. The Cultural Heritage Administration stated, "It allows us to estimate the origin and development history of water collection sites in Silla mountain fortresses."
