Summer Vacation Season Diet Book Sales Increase... 28% Rise Compared to Previous Month
As the summer season approaches, when body exposure relatively increases, sales of diet-related books are on the rise. According to the cultural content platform Yes24, sales of books in the 'Diet/Beauty' category increased by 27.7% in May compared to the previous month. The 'Diet/Beauty' category had seen a decline in sales every year since the start of COVID-19 in 2020, but this year, with the advent of the endemic, sales increased by 13.1%, showing signs of recovery.
Books on diet methodologies attracted attention. Sales increased for YouTuber Choi Gyeom’s “Diet Science 2022,” which points out errors in the existing diet paradigm, influencer Son Lisa’s diet essay “I Am Getting Lighter Every Day,” and “To You Who Are Lost on How to Lose Weight,” which contains weight loss methods devised by a pharmacist author.

The proportion of male readers purchasing also increased. In the 'Diet/Beauty' category, the proportion of male readers’ purchases rose from 29.7% in 2019 to 39.7% in 2023, an increase of 10 percentage points. Especially this year, male readers accounted for 56.8% of purchases under the keyword 'muscle/strength training.' Books such as “Kim Myungseop’s Health Classroom,” written by a former national bodybuilding representative, and “20 Miracle Exercises for Lifelong Use,” which contains minimal exercises possible in daily life, attracted attention. The proportion of male buyers for these books was 80.2% and 62.3%, respectively.
