Chungnam Province to Establish 'Defense Future Technology Research Center' in Nonsan by 2030
The advanced future defense research facility, tentatively named the Defense Future Technology Research Center (hereinafter referred to as the Center), will be established in Nonsan, Chungnam.
On the 19th, Chungnam Province announced that Governor Kim Tae-heum, Director Park Jong-seung of the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), and Mayor Baek Seong-hyun of Nonsan signed a business agreement at the Chungnam Provincial Office to establish the Center.
Earlier, on April 24, Governor Kim met with Minister Lee Jong-seop of the Ministry of National Defense to request the relocation of the Korea Military Academy to Nonsan for the establishment of a defense industry innovation cluster, as well as the relocation and establishment of defense institutions in Chungnam. At that time, Minister Lee assured Governor Kim that the Center would be newly established in Nonsan.
The agreement was signed to formalize the commitment made by Minister Lee to Governor Kim within two months and to pledge cooperation among the institutions for the construction of the Center.
According to the agreement, ADD will invest 296.9 billion KRW from next year until 2030 to build the Center on a 396,000㎡ site in Nonsan City.
The Center will conduct future operations such as artificial intelligence unmanned system operation experiments, robot system testing, Chem-Bio testing, special performance evaluation research laboratories for military batteries, and next-generation defense energy research.
Chungnam Province expects that attracting the Center will contribute to the ongoing establishment of the Defense National Industrial Complex and Defense Innovation Cluster in Chungnam, as well as securing new markets for advanced technologies such as defense artificial intelligence and robotics.
It is also anticipated to boost the attraction of private defense-related companies and defense-related institutions such as the Defense Artificial Intelligence Center, Korea Defense Research Institute, and Defense Career Education Institute, accelerating the completion of the defense cluster and the defense capital.
The Chungnam Research Institute analyzes that the establishment of the Center will generate economic effects including a production effect of 384.7 billion KRW, a value-added inducement effect of 126.7 billion KRW, employment inducement of 1,605 jobs, and the attraction of about 60 advanced anchor companies.
