Yongsan History Museum's First Seminar... Historical and Geopolitical Understanding of the Covered Mancho Stream
Topic Presentation by Yongsan-based Research Group Yongsan__Zip
Discussing the Geopolitical Significance of Mancho Stream, Its Connection to Urban Transformation, and Livelihood Patterns in Surrounding Areas
Mancho Stream (蔓草川), named for the dense vines along its banks, originated from the west side of Inwangsan and the southwest side of Namsan, merging near Samgakji before flowing into the Han River. Currently, most of the main stream section of Mancho Stream is covered, making it inaccessible and unusable for citizens.
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) will hold a seminar titled “A Stream That Became a River, Mancho Stream” at 2 PM on the 17th in the education room on the 2nd floor of the Yongsan History Museum.
This is the first seminar hosted by the Yongsan History Museum, co-planned with Yongsan_Zip, a Yongsan-based research group. Yongsan_Zip conducts research activities in various fields related to Yongsan, including Yongsan Park.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “This seminar is an opportunity to reexamine the historical and geopolitical value of Mancho Stream, which runs through most parts of Yongsan. It will also serve as a chance to devise ways to utilize Mancho Stream in connection with the International Business District and the development of Yongsan Park.”
The seminar will be held in three parts, and participation is free of charge. Part 1 includes the introduction of various urban landscape videos of the upper Mancho Stream, Part 2 features topic presentations and designated discussions, and Part 3 is an open discussion for participants.
In particular, during Part 2, topic presentations were given by ▲ Kim Hong-ryeol, research secretary of Yongsan_Zip, on “The Geopolitical Significance of Mancho Stream and Its Connection to Urban Transformation” and ▲ Oh Moon-seon, a member of Yongsan_Zip, on “Livelihood Patterns and Aspects of the Areas Surrounding Mancho Stream.”
Research secretary Kim Hong-ryeol suggested changes in the landscape of the main stream section of Mancho Stream due to urban development over different periods and proposed future development directions. Specifically, he explained urban changes in the tributary sections of Mancho Stream flowing from Namsan to Huam-dong (old Joseon-era roads and waterways) and Yongsan 2-ga-dong (the old Itaewon village and Yongsan US military base).
Member Oh Moon-seon introduced the livelihood aspects and humanities of the Mancho Stream section. He also covered historical facts such as the stream being called Ukcheon (旭川) until 1995 and Japanese-style place names remaining on some road facilities, relating to the toponymy of Mancho Stream.
