Yongsan-gu Promotes Public Wi-Fi Speed Enhancement Project

Replacing 88 Open Wireless Repeaters, 20 Communication Devices, and 1 Wireless Controller in Multi-use Facilities
Bridging the Digital Divide and Reducing Communication Costs
Yongsan-gu (Mayor Park Hee-young) is advancing a project to enhance the speed of public Wi-Fi in multi-use facilities.
This initiative aims to help bridge the digital divide among residents and reduce their communication expenses.
The district plans to invest about 200 million KRW by August to replace key equipment installed in 88 multi-use facilities?including Itaewon Street, traditional markets, neighborhood parks, the district office building, and community service centers?with high-performance, high-spec devices.
Yongsan-gu will recruit contractors in June and begin replacements in July. The replacement targets include 88 open wireless repeaters and 20 industrial switches installed between 2011 and 2015.
After replacement, the speed will be about four times faster compared to the existing WiFi4 and WiFi5, improving data transmission rates. The latest security standard WPA3 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 3) will be applied to ensure security safety.
Currently, Yongsan-gu has installed and operates 744 open wireless repeaters across 27 traditional markets such as Huam, Yongmun, Ichon, Malli, Itaewon, and Bogwang; 26 neighborhood parks including Hyochang, Ichon Hangang, Yongsan Family, and Seongchon; 9 main streets such as Itaewon, Sookdae, Haebangchon-gil, and Yongridan-gil; 10 cultural facilities including Yongsan Craft Center and Yongsan Cultural Center; 107 bus stops including Sookdaeipgu Station, Electronics Market, and Ichon Station; and 24 welfare facilities such as Galwol and Hyochang Comprehensive Social Welfare Centers.
Once connected to the public Wi-Fi SSID, users can automatically reconnect for convenient use.
The district operates a ‘Rapid Response Team’ that centralizes regular inspections, fault handling, and civil complaint responses for public Wi-Fi. This team ensures swift action when faults occur.
