Statistics Korea to Develop 'ChatGPT for Businesses'... Implementing Customized Statistical Services
Announcement on the 8th of 'Strengthening the Role of National Statistics to Support Business Activities'
Building a Super-large AI Statistical Chatbot and Expanding Access to Foreign Statistics
The government is launching the establishment of a super-large AI-based statistical service, such as ChatGPT, to facilitate smooth statistical utilization by companies.
On the 8th, Statistics Korea announced this by unveiling the "Plan to Strengthen the Role of National Statistics to Support Corporate Activities." As a follow-up measure to the "Plan to Activate the Use of Statistics to Support Corporate Activities" discussed at the emergency economic vice-ministerial meeting held on the 12th of last month, it plans to pilot the construction of a "Super-large AI Statistical Chatbot" with enhanced search functions on the National Statistical Portal next year. Additionally, by 2028, it will establish a "Statistical Data Hub Platform" and a "Statistical Information Platform and One Portal" applying new data protection technologies, thereby creating a convenient data usage infrastructure for companies.
According to the plan, Statistics Korea will introduce intelligent technologies such as super-large AI to expand curator functions that guide users to easily find the statistics they need. Support such as data consulting for small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners will also be strengthened.
Statistics desired by companies will be developed, and timeliness will be improved. Experimental statistics and prompt indicators using big data, such as subscription service expenditures for delivery apps and OTT, will be expanded. Statistical indicators on new topics such as ESG management and climate change crises will be developed, and to support timely understanding of regional economic conditions, the cycle of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) statistics will be advanced from annual to quarterly.
Assets held by Statistics Korea, such as the Statistical Data Centers, will also be activated. The 11 Statistical Data Centers nationwide and the spaces and facilities of the Statistical Education Institutes located in Daejeon, Seoul, and Jeju will be shared with the private sector for purposes such as education, meetings, and startup support. The centers are equipped with specialized data analysis programs that are burdensome for individuals or small business owners to prepare individually.
Furthermore, to support companies' global expansion, international cooperation in the field of statistics will be strengthened. Cooperation with export support agencies will be expanded, and accessibility to foreign statistics will be secured through data-sharing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with overseas statistical authorities. The "Korea in the World" service on the National Statistical Portal will also be reorganized to allow comparison of thematic statistical information at the level of major countries including Korea.
Private sector participation for statistical innovation will also be encouraged. Statistics Korea will recognize private companies producing useful statistical information for the public as "Contributing Companies to Statistical Development" and support innovative startup ideas using statistics and data. Additionally, by introducing private sector data into national statistical work, new statistics will be developed through public-private collaboration, such as living population statistics and worker mobility behavior statistics.
