Kim Ki-hyun - Lee Jae-myung TV Debate?... Subtle Temperature Difference Between Ruling and Opposition Parties
Ruling Party: "Should Continue with Private Talks After TV Debate"
Opposition: "Private Talks Eliminate Ways for Public to Evaluate"
Attention is focused on whether a TV debate between Kim Gi-hyeon, leader of the People Power Party, and Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, will take place. Both sides have agreed on the format of a TV debate, but no practical discussions regarding specific schedules have been conducted. Additionally, a subtle difference in stance between the ruling and opposition parties is detected over whether to continue with additional private talks after the TV debate.
Previously, Kim and Lee engaged in a tense exchange over a meal invitation and refusal. Lee publicly declined Kim's meal invitation and proposed a "policy public debate," to which Kim counter-proposed a "TV debate format," leading to an agreement to meet.

Both parties have agreed in principle on the TV debate format. Kang Seon-woo, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, said in an interview on SBS Radio's "Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show" on the 29th that the possibility of the TV debate taking place is high, stating, "Lee's willingness is strong, and he wants it to happen soon," adding, "A working-level team consisting of the chair of the Policy Committee and the Chief Secretary has been formed to decide on the agenda and issues to be addressed."
Regarding why Lee proposed a public debate, Kang explained, "Lee wants to be evaluated by the public through policy dialogue," and added, "Eating and drinking privately does not provide a way for the public to evaluate. Therefore, he wants to have a public discussion."
When asked whether Lee would be willing to accept the initially proposed private meal meeting by Kim, Kang avoided a direct answer, saying, "We will have to see after the policy debate."
The People Power Party agrees to the TV debate but insists that it should be followed by private talks. Jang Dong-hyuk, spokesperson for the People Power Party's floor, said on the same broadcast, "If the TV debate ends as a one-time event, discussions on policy will be merely formal and declarative," emphasizing, "For substantive dialogue to take place and to restore parliamentary politics, private policy talks must continue."
Jang added, "Since Lee has said that he will not be bound by the method and format when it comes to dialogue, I believe he will not refuse private one-on-one talks following the TV policy debate."

There is growing anticipation in political circles that this could be a rare opportunity to open the door to cooperation between the ruling and opposition parties. However, since practical discussions have not yet begun, it is expected to take some time before specific schedules and formats are finalized. Kim Yong-tae, former Supreme Council member of the People Power Party, predicted, "As the leaders of both parties face complex internal issues and need a new breakthrough, a policy debate could be a win-win for both sides."
