On this day, the university students from Daegu and Gyeongbuk declared their determination to grow as secondary battery experts leading the global K-battery industry. The university presidents responded by pledging to unite their efforts to help students develop into talents who will contribute to the future development of the secondary battery industry.
In particular, the attendees enthusiastically launched paper airplanes high into the sky at POSCO Future M, a secondary battery anchor company located in the Blue Valley National Industrial Complex, expressing their united hope for Pohang’s selection as the secondary battery specialized complex.
Following this, the university students toured the Pohang campus of EcoPro, a key local secondary battery industry company located in the Yeongilman Industrial Complex, and attended a corporate briefing session to share the importance, value, and vision for the future development of the secondary battery industry.
Vice Mayor Kim Nam-il said, “As the university students from Daegu and Gyeongbuk launched paper airplanes filled with their hopes, we once again confirmed the passionate desire and will of local youth to attract the national advanced strategic secondary battery specialized complex to Pohang.” He added, “We will do our best to help Pohang leap forward as a global K-battery secondary battery industry hub city and to lead regional economic revitalization and job creation.”
Pohang has proactively focused on nurturing the secondary battery industry as a new future growth engine based on its steel industry foundation. The next-generation battery recycling regulatory free zone, designated in 2019, is the only one among 29 special zones nationwide to be recognized as an excellent zone for three consecutive years, making it the most successful special zone model.
Currently, global secondary battery companies such as POSCO Future M, EcoPro, and GS Construction are concentrated in the Blue Valley National Industrial Complex and Yeongilman General Industrial Complex. Pohang succeeded in attracting large-scale investments worth 5 trillion won in the first half of this year alone, and with additional expansions and new investments by companies, investments totaling 14 trillion won are planned through 2027.
Last year, Pohang led the nation with a production volume of 150,000 tons of cathode materials. By 2030, it is expected to firmly establish itself as a leading secondary battery industry city by producing 1 million tons of cathode materials and achieving sales of 70 trillion won.
