Gwangju Mayor Kang Gi-jung expressed a welcoming message regarding the statement released by Lee Sang-ik, former Hampyeong County Governor of Jeonnam, that "the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport is a major turning point for the development of Hampyeong."
On the 8th, Mayor Kang Gi-jung stated in a press release, "'The Special Act on the Relocation of Gwangju Military Airport and the Former Site' was enacted and promulgated on April 25, creating an opportunity to accelerate the relocation of Gwangju Military Airport," adding, "With the enactment of the Gwangju Military Airport Special Act, it is an important time for the interested relocation areas to consider support projects and regional development possibilities related to the military airport site and to contemplate what path would best serve the local residents."
He continued, "At this time, the statement released by Hampyeong County, expressing its will to overcome the crisis of regional extinction and seek opportunities for regional development, is very welcome," and emphasized, "We respect Hampyeong County’s position to decide on hosting the military airport through a public opinion survey of residents and transparent procedures and will actively engage in discussions to ensure that support projects for the relocation areas contribute to the mutual growth of Gwangju and Jeonnam."
Additionally, he added, "We will actively communicate with the hopeful relocation areas and closely coordinate with the political circles to ensure that the long-awaited Gwangju Military Airport relocation project progresses without further delays."
Meanwhile, Lee Sang-ik, Hampyeong County Governor, stated in the same statement, "Hampyeong faced a critical crisis as the number of births last year was only 75, and within the next five years, the number of births could drop to zero," expressing, "As the county governor, I feel a heavy responsibility for the crisis of regional extinction."
He further said, "Through the Gwangju Military Airport relocation project, a turning point will be created to overcome the crisis of regional extinction and achieve a major transformation in Hampyeong’s development."
