The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police for Public Welfare announced on the 8th that from the 15th to the 26th, they will conduct a focused crackdown on illegal lodging businesses, including officetels, in 11 areas such as Suwon, Bucheon, Seongnam, and Goyang.
This crackdown was planned to create a fair lodging environment in response to the recent surge in illegal lodging businesses using online shared lodging platforms.
The main targets of the crackdown include unregistered lodging operations and continuing business despite administrative orders to close the establishments.
The special judicial police will particularly focus on cracking down on operations that run multiple rooms in officetels, apartments, and other facilities to gain unfair profits. For businesses caught, administrative sanctions will be requested from the relevant local governments, and cases will be referred to the prosecution for strict action according to related laws.
Under the current Public Health Control Act, unregistered lodging operations are punishable by imprisonment of up to 2 years or a fine of up to 20 million KRW, and failure to comply with administrative closure orders can result in imprisonment of up to 1 year or a fine of up to 10 million KRW.
