Before Leaving Your Home During the May Holidays, Make Sure to Check This
May Overseas Travel Surge Raises Empty Home Warning
SK Shieldus Announces 'ADT Caps 4 Major Home Security Rules'
Amid the Golden Holiday period in May, travel demand has increased more than before the COVID-19 pandemic, and SK Shieldus (CEO Park Jin-hyo) has announced the 'ADT Caps 4 Major Home Security Rules' to prepare for incidents related to vacant houses.
Recently, as the skies that were closed due to COVID-19 have fully reopened, the number of overseas travelers is increasing. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's aviation statistics, the number of international passengers on domestic airlines in the first quarter of this year was about 9.88 million, nearly 16 times higher than in the first quarter of last year. In particular, May includes three holidays?May 1 Labor Day, May 5 Children's Day, and May 29 Buddha's Birthday substitute holiday?that fall consecutively with weekends, so overseas travel demand is expected to surge.
When leaving home for a long period due to overseas travel, it is difficult to respond immediately to incidents related to vacant houses, so thorough security checks beforehand are essential. SK Shieldus first recommends changing the door lock password before leaving home for an extended period. Frequently used passwords may have worn buttons or fingerprints, which could expose the code. It is also advisable to block possible entry points such as the milk delivery slot or windows in advance.
It is also important to prevent mail or packages from piling up in front of the house. If outsiders notice that the house is unoccupied for a long time, it can become a target for crime. Regular deliveries of daily necessities or fresh food should be temporarily suspended during the absence. If unavoidable, using the security office or unmanned parcel lockers for proxy receipt is also a good method.
One should refrain from exposing private life on messengers or social media. Recently, burglary methods have evolved, and there have been cases where photos of airline tickets or current location information uploaded on KakaoTalk or Instagram have been exploited for crimes. Especially, widgets or posts hinting at the travel date can increase the risk of crime, so caution is necessary.

Using security-related systems or services is also a good method. Through the 'Flexible Patrol System,' where applicants select the desired time and place, the police strengthen patrols accordingly, enhancing security during travel. An SK Shieldus official said, "As more people plan long-term outings such as overseas travel ahead of the May Golden Holiday, residential crimes targeting vacant houses are expected to surge. Since it is difficult to respond quickly to incidents while abroad, we urge people to carefully follow security rules before going out."
