Woo Jong-su (55), the 2nd Chief of the National Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency, took office on the 29th. The Chief of the National Investigation Headquarters commands the heads of 18 city and provincial police agencies nationwide, police station chiefs, and approximately 30,000 investigative police officers across the country.
At the inauguration ceremony held at the National Police Agency, Chief Woo stated, "I feel a heavy sense of responsibility in taking on the important role of Chief of the National Investigation Headquarters," adding, "Based on the foundation laid so far, I will firmly pave the way forward to become a more advanced investigative police force."
He said, "The public's expectations remain high, and the complexity of investigations continues to increase," and added, "As the Chief of the National Investigation Headquarters, I will be an unwavering support for you all."
Chief Woo identified eradicating crime as his top priority. He stated, "I will lead the eradication of crime by strengthening specific investigative command and supervision over individual cases handled by city and provincial police agencies and frontline police stations."
He also pledged to concentrate the police's investigative capabilities on financial crimes targeting ordinary citizens, such as rental fraud and voice phishing, as well as drug offenses, violence at construction sites, robbery and theft, and cybercrimes, responding with full force.
Chief Woo further said, "We will stand with victims of crime until they receive practical support and recovery," and added, "We will shift the paradigm of economic crime investigations toward victim recovery and the confiscation of criminal proceeds."
Regarding the police organization, he emphasized the need to enhance advanced investigative capabilities. He said, "To avoid falling behind evolving criminal methods, we must continuously strive without remaining stuck in the past," and added, "We must integrate the latest scientific technologies into investigations to develop cutting-edge investigative capabilities that lead the world."
Finally, he added, "I will continue to promote strengthening responsible investigative capabilities and improving treatment to create investigative departments where excellent investigators can serve for a long time."

Chief Woo is from Seoul and joined the police in 1999 through a special recruitment from the 38th Administrative Examination. He has served as the chief of Yongsan Police Station in Seoul, personnel officer, and director of the Criminal Affairs Bureau at the National Police Agency. In 2018, while serving as the head of the investigation department at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, he led the investigation into the Druking case.
