Controversy Over Kim Young-hwan's "Becoming a Pro-Japanese Collaborator" Post... "Patriotic Writing Turns Pro-Japanese, Sigh"
Governor Kim Young-hwan of Chungbuk, who faced public backlash for writing a post defending the government's compensation solution for forced labor victims and stating he would "willingly become a pro-Japanese collaborator," has responded by calling it a "fallacy of context omission."
On the 11th, Governor Kim wrote on his SNS, "In my post 'Spit on My Grave' (dated March 7), some people took the sentence 'I will rather become a pro-Japanese collaborator' out of context without considering the overall meaning, distorting the point and labeling me as a pro-Japanese collaborator. I have objections to this."
He added, "This is truly an outrageous fallacy of context omission and an insult to my writing and character," and claimed, "I feel despair over whether our reason should surrender like this in the face of political strife and factional logic." He continued, "Having spent my life writing poetry and loving my mother tongue, I cannot help but lament this astonishing chemical transformation where even my use of irony or literary expression in a patriotic text is distorted and instantly turned into pro-Japanese sentiment."
Earlier, on the 7th, Governor Kim posted on SNS supporting the government's policy of third-party subrogation compensation for forced labor victims during the Japanese colonial period. The phrase "I will become a pro-Japanese collaborator" became the center of controversy.
He explained, referring to parts of his post such as "Regarding Japan's unrepentant attitude, losing is rather winning" and "We must take time and urge Japan to change and awaken," "I praised our government's stance of extending a hand for reconciliation first as the courage to swallow humiliation."
Governor Kim concluded his post by saying, "No matter how you look at it, my unwavering loyalty to my homeland is clear in that writing."
