Former Dongdaemun District Mayor Yu Deok-yeol, Third Arrest Warrant for 'Bribery' Charges
Suspected of Receiving Bribes for Promotion and Misusing Public Funds for Personal Use
Pre-Detention Suspect Interrogation Scheduled for the 9th
Yu Deok-yeol, former mayor of Dongdaemun District in Seoul (69), who is accused of accepting money and valuables in exchange for promotions, is facing the possibility of detention.
According to the police and legal circles on the 7th, the Anti-Corruption and Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency applied for an arrest warrant for former Mayor Yu on the 24th of last month, and the prosecution requested the warrant from the court on the 6th. The pre-arrest interrogation of the suspect is scheduled to be held at 10:30 a.m. on the 9th at the Seoul Central District Court.
According to the police, former Mayor Yu is suspected of receiving money and valuables worth tens of millions of won from employees in exchange for promotion personnel affairs and misusing public funds such as business promotion expenses for personal purposes. The police have applied charges of bribery after taking office, abuse of authority, embezzlement, and violation of the Local Public Officials Act against former Mayor Yu.
This is the third time the police have requested an arrest warrant for former Mayor Yu. In June and August of last year, the police applied for arrest warrants for former Mayor Yu and Jang, the chief secretary accused of delivering bribes, but the prosecution rejected all requests citing insufficient evidence.

After supplementary investigations, the police handed over Jang to the prosecution in custody in November last year and focused on strengthening the charges against former Mayor Yu. Yu served as the mayor of Dongdaemun District from 1998 to 2002 and was re-elected three more times in the local elections of 2010, 2014, and 2018. The police have been investigating for over a year, including conducting searches of his office and residence in August 2021 when he was the incumbent mayor.
