LH Advances Pakistan Housing Environment Improvement Project... Secures 1.36 Million Tons of Carbon Emission Credits
Installation of Water Purification Facilities and High-Efficiency Streetlights in Karachi Area
Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced on the 7th that it will promote a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project linked to improving residential environments in slum areas in Pakistan.
Earlier, on the 21st of last month, the Pakistan Ministry of Climate Change notified national approval for the CDM project proposed by LH. CDM is a project method under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change whereby developed countries invest in greenhouse gas reduction projects in developing countries and use the resulting reduction achievements to meet their own greenhouse gas reduction targets.
Through this national approval, LH has secured the right to carry out greenhouse gas reduction projects across Pakistan for 28 years.
Going forward, LH plans to implement the project in 31 villages within the Karachi area, selected through consultations with the Sindh provincial government and local community representatives in Pakistan.
First, 213 water purification facilities will be installed to supply approximately 4 million liters of clean drinking water daily, and 21,000 high-efficiency streetlights will be installed or replaced to reduce electricity consumption.
Additionally, 200 million bricks will be produced and supplied in a way that reduces carbon emissions to support the renovation of residents’ aging houses.
To allow local residents to experience the benefits of improved residential environments, eight abandoned idle sites (approximately 30,000 square meters) within the villages will be remodeled into community parks.
LH expects this project to support the improvement of residents’ living environments and quality of life while fundamentally eliminating sources of greenhouse gas emissions, reducing about 1.36 million tons of greenhouse gases.
Furthermore, it is anticipated that overseas orders worth approximately 46 billion KRW can be supported by providing participation opportunities for Korean companies during investment, construction, and operation processes.
LH plans to pursue UN registration of the program project plan starting in April and complete UN registration of unit project plans by next year. It will also promote public recruitment of private operators and project agreements within this year, aiming for full-scale construction by the end of next year.
