Sacheon City Conducts Illegal Fishing Supervision and Crackdown for Two Months from April to May
Guidance and Crackdown to Eradicate Illegal Capture and Distribution in Spring
Sacheon City in Gyeongnam Province will conduct guidance and crackdowns on illegal fishing for two months from April to May to protect marine resources and prevent illegal fishing by eradicating the illegal capture and distribution of juvenile fish in spring.
According to the city, every year in March and April, juvenile squid are caught along the East and South Sea coasts and distributed under the nickname "Bullet Squid," and juvenile conger eels, also called chick or white fish, are illegally caught and distributed.
Accordingly, the city plans to carry out promotional activities throughout March to prohibit the capture of juvenile fish in spring, focusing on fishermen's organizations, the Fisheries Cooperative, local auction sites, and traditional markets.
From April 1 to May 31, for two months, the city will intensively crack down on ▲illegal sale and distribution of caught marine products ▲unauthorized trading in TAC industries ▲unauthorized fishing operations ▲violations of capture bans. The main targets of the crackdown are the squid and conger eel.
The prohibited size for squid is a mantle length of 15 cm or less, and for conger eel, a total length of 35 cm or less. However, if the catch of squid below the prohibited size accounts for less than 20% of the total squid catch, it is exempted.
The prohibited period for catching and harvesting squid is from April 1 to May 31 (for nearshore jigging fisheries, coastal combined fisheries, and set net fisheries, from April 1 to April 30), but there is no set prohibited period for catching and harvesting conger eel.
