[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Wanyong] Hyundai Engineering announced on the 28th that it held discussions with the government of Alberta, Canada, regarding the construction project of Small Modular Reactors (SMR).
On the 27th, Brian Jean, Minister of Employment, Economic and Northern Development of Alberta, Canada, and Rajan Sawhney, Minister of Trade, Immigration and Multiculturalism, visited Hyundai Engineering's headquarters and discussed with Hyundai Engineering CEO Hong Hyunseong and others ways to achieve Alberta's 'Zero Emission' goal.

View original imageAt this meeting, the Alberta government explained its plan to replace steam and electricity used in fossil fuel power plants and oil sand plants with SMRs to achieve the zero emission system by 2050, and actively requested Hyundai Engineering's participation.
Hyundai Engineering presented explanations and cooperation plans regarding related projects such as the world's first 4th generation Micro Modular Reactor (MMR), 100MWe-class small reactors, and hydrogen production and charging businesses.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Engineering signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the government of Alberta, Canada, in December 2021, together with academic and research institutions such as the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), for the 'Canada Alberta Small Reactor Construction Project,' and is currently conducting the world's first 4th generation MMR demonstration project in the Chalk River area of Canada.
