Prosecution Appeals for 4-Year Prison Sentence of Instructor in 'US SAT Test Leak' Case
The prosecution has appealed the first trial's sentence of four years imprisonment given to an English academy instructor accused of leaking the U.S. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) question papers and answer sheets.
On the 24th, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office Trial Division 3 (Chief Prosecutor Lee Jeong-ryeol) announced that it submitted an appeal to the first trial court in the case of instructor A (53), who was indicted on charges of obstruction of business, citing factual errors and inappropriate sentencing as reasons.
The prosecution explained the reason for the appeal, stating, "The defendant severely damaged social trust in the fairness of the exam by illegally leaking test papers administered abroad for many years for personal fame and financial gain," and added, "Considering the sense of deprivation felt by students preparing for this exam worldwide, a heavier punishment is necessary."
A was tried on charges of providing leaked question papers and answer sheets to students 59 times from May 2014 to December 2019, together with brokers and contract teachers at foreign language high schools, earning approximately 1 billion won.
