Scholarship and Employment Support Benefits Offered
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] LG Electronics is nurturing talent for smart TV software platforms in collaboration with Yonsei University. They aim to encourage Gen Z platform development participation to expand the webOS platform.
On the 24th, LG Electronics announced that it signed a three-day business agreement for smart TV software talent development at the AI Convergence College of Engineering at Yonsei University in Sinchon-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.
Starting next month, a course titled 'Connected Platform Theory and Practice' will be created for 3rd and 4th-year students in the Department of Computer Science at the AI Convergence College. The course will introduce the embedded smart TV platform webOS and its underlying technologies, as well as the latest technologies such as AI and big data. Students will be given opportunities to apply what they learn at school to actual products. The course will teach large-scale software development, AI technologies, and experiences connecting various devices.
Park Seo-jung, who applied for the course, said, "I want to study how the basic computer science knowledge I have learned so far is applied to large-scale software development," adding, "I want to know how developers efficiently develop large products simultaneously and how they find and resolve code conflicts during development."
Outstanding students will receive benefits during LG Electronics' recruitment process. When Yonsei University recommends outstanding students to LG Electronics, LG Electronics will select students suitable for the R&D department's industry-academia scholarship recruitment process and provide scholarships until graduation.

LG Electronics judged that to provide services consumers want, such as home fitness, remote medical care, AI content recommendation, and voice recognition functions, it is necessary to cultivate TV platform talent. This is because to organically operate various functions, the software platform must be well developed.
The problem is that younger generations like Gen Z have a low understanding of home appliance software. LG Electronics determined that cultivating customized talent is essential to properly operate the TV platform business.
Professor Lee Kyung-woo of Yonsei University's Department of Computer Science said, "If students can directly develop AI services using the webOS-based smart TV platform, soundbars, and other peripherals, they will be equipped with software technologies suitable for various future platforms."
Jung Jae-cheol, Executive Director and Head of LG Electronics HE (Home Entertainment) Research Center, said, "Securing talent who are well-versed in smart TV software is very important for expanding the LG Electronics webOS ecosystem," adding, "We will continuously increase industry-academia cooperation to advance TV platforms and services."

LG Electronics is expanding the webOS platform ecosystem. In 2021, it acquired Alfonso, a U.S. advertising and content data analytics company, to expand its proprietary ACR (Automatic Content Recognition) solution. More than 300 TV brands have adopted webOS. The number of webOS-supported applications exceeded 2,500 as of the end of last year.
