"Accelerating 5G Commercialization and Securing Essential 6G Technologies in Advance"
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Samsung Electronics has secured non-terrestrial network (NTN) standard technology that connects mobile devices and satellites through 5G (5th generation) mobile communication and will apply it to its own application processor (AP), Exynos. This technology is used in places where terrestrial networks, such as urban air mobility (UAM), have poor coverage.
The development was led by Samsung’s system semiconductor design division, the System LSI (Large Scale Integration) business unit.

On the 23rd, Samsung Electronics announced that it applied NTN standard technology to the Exynos Modem 5300 and completed verification of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release-17, the latest 3GPP standard.
NTN technology provides communication coverage without blind spots in shadow areas such as deserts, seas, and mountainous regions, as well as during disaster situations. It is widely used in UAM such as unmanned aerial vehicles and flying cars where terrestrial networks do not reach.
It is a core modem technology utilizing satellite communication. This technology is necessary to accelerate the commercialization of 5G and prepare for the 6G era. It is characterized by easy utilization by telecom operators, terminals, and semiconductor companies alike.

This technology predicts the position of low-earth orbit satellites orbiting the Earth based on 5G and minimizes frequency errors. Applying this technology allows free transmission and reception of large-capacity data such as photos and videos, as well as simple text messages.
Samsung plans to develop and apply NB-IoT (Narrowband Internet of Things)-based satellite communication standard technology to the Exynos modem. This will reduce design constraints for mobile products because satellite transmission and reception output can be achieved without including a high-power antenna chip for wireless communication.

Kim Mingu, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ System LSI business unit, said, "Samsung Electronics was the first in the industry to commercialize a 4G LTE modem in 2009 and developed the first multi-mode modem based on 5G communication standards in 2018. We will lead hybrid communication encompassing terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks and 6G mobile communication technology in the future."
Samsung Electronics’ System LSI business unit is the only fabless (design) organization in the world that provides SoC (System on Chip), image sensors, PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit), and DDI (Display Driver IC). It has about 900 system semiconductor portfolios. The application of the Exynos modem lineup is expanding from mobile to vehicles.
