Ministry of Foreign Affairs Urges Immediate Abolition of Japan's 'Takeshima Day' Event... Summons Charg? d'Affaires in Korea
"Repeated Unjust Territorial Claims... Event Must Be Canceled"
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the 22nd urging the immediate abolition of the "Takeshima Day" event hosted by Shimane Prefecture, Japan. They also summoned Kumagai Naoki, Minister-Counselor of the Embassy of Japan in Korea, to lodge a protest.
In a spokesperson's statement on the same day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "Regarding the holding of Takeshima Day and the attendance of high-ranking Japanese officials at the event, we strongly protest Japan's repeated unjust territorial claims over Dokdo and sternly urge the immediate abolition of this event."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated, "Dokdo is clearly our inherent territory from historical, geographical, and international law perspectives. The Japanese government must immediately cease its unjust claims over Dokdo and humbly face history."

The term 'summon' refers to the act of a country's diplomatic authorities calling in the ambassador, minister, or consul of a foreign country stationed in their country to their diplomatic office for diplomatic reasons concerning bilateral relations. Although it is not as severe as recalling one's own ambassador, expelling the other country's ambassador, or designating a diplomatic persona non grata, it is a negative diplomatic response.
The Japanese government reportedly dispatched Nakano Hideyuki, a Deputy Minister-level Political Vice-Minister of the Cabinet Office, to the "Takeshima Day" event held in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, in the afternoon of the same day.
