Seoul City Strengthens Management of Road Re-entrained Dust
Selection of 77 'Priority Management Road Sections'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Seoul City announced on the 20th that it is implementing the ‘4th Seasonal Fine Dust Management System’ to protect citizens' health from air pollution during seasons with high fine dust levels. In particular, to reduce exposure to high-concentration fine dust along roadsides, 77 fine dust ‘Priority Management Road Sections’ have been selected to manage road re-suspended dust.
The Seoul Institute of Health and Environment contributes to reducing the generation of road re-suspended dust particles smaller than 10㎛ caused by vehicle driving on dust-contaminated roads through the regular operation of real-time measurement vehicles.
The institute has been measuring road re-suspended dust since July 2016, and in 2022, it conducted a total of 424 measurements on 77 priority management road sections across 25 autonomous districts. Immediate reduction measures were taken for two sections that exceeded the standards (Eungbonggyo Intersection: 279㎍/㎥, Achasan Station Intersection - Gwangnaru Station Section: 408㎍/㎥), proactively responding to fine dust reduction.
The institute stated that even after the end of the ‘Seasonal Fine Dust Management System,’ it will measure road re-suspended dust in the ‘Priority Management Road Sections’ once to three times a week to reduce citizens' exposure to fine dust and to create a ‘Clearer Seoul.’

Shin Yongseung, Director of the Institute of Health and Environment, said, “Since road re-suspended dust accounts for about 20% of Seoul City's total fine dust emissions and can directly affect citizens' health, the institute will do its best to protect public health through strengthened management and immediate action on road re-suspended dust.” He added, “We will also enhance research capabilities for air quality improvement policies that citizens can feel and ensure that policies are implemented efficiently.”
