The first competition was originally scheduled to be held from September 19 to 26, 2020, at Korea National University of Arts and Lotte Concert Hall, but was postponed to September 2021 due to the COVID-19 situation. Among the 12 finalists at that time, nine were foreign nationals, and considering the ongoing pandemic, it was deemed impractical to hold the competition with participants and judges entering from various countries. Therefore, the first competition concluded with the selection of finalists, and it was agreed to hold the second competition in September 2023.

Kim Seon-kwang CEO of Lotte Cultural Foundation stated, “The Korea International Organ Competition will elevate the level of organ music in Korea, and based on this competition, more musical talents will grow into accomplished performers.”

Professor Oh Ja-kyung, Chairperson of the Korea International Organ Competition and faculty member of the Korea National University of Arts College of Music, said, “It is very meaningful to hold an international organ competition in Korea,” adding, “Through this competition, we aim to widely promote organ music to the general public and encourage and discover talented young organists.”
