Prices of Five Grains and Bureom for Jeongwol Daeboreum Fall 4% Compared to Last Year
Traditional Markets Are 29.8% Cheaper Than Large Supermarkets
This year, the prices of bureom (nuts) and ogok (five-grain rice) eaten during Jeongwol Daeboreum have been found to be cheaper than last year.
According to Korea Price Information, a price survey organization, ahead of Jeongwol Daeboreum (the 5th), a survey of prices for 10 major items showed that traditional markets cost 125,300 won, while large supermarkets cost 162,660 won.
The purchase price at traditional markets was 2.2% lower than last year, and large supermarkets were 4% lower. The survey items included five ingredients for ogokbap (glutinous rice, millet, proso millet, red beans, black beans) and five ingredients for bureom (pine nuts, chestnuts, walnuts, ginkgo nuts, peanuts), with traditional market prices being 29.8% cheaper than those at large supermarkets.
Prices for ogok and bureom rose for all items until 2021, then mostly declined last year, and this year continued the downward trend except for peanuts. The ingredients for ogokbap showed a price decline last year due to good harvests, but peanuts saw a price increase as both domestic production and imports decreased.

Lee Dong-hoon, a senior researcher at Korea Price Information, said, “Grains, which had high prices due to poor harvests caused by bad weather in 2020-2021, experienced good harvests for two consecutive years. The large increase in production two years ago led to high stock levels, but consumption decreased due to factors such as COVID-19, resulting in reduced demand, which appears to be the main cause of the price decline.”
