Ulsan City and Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Jointly Explore Smart Ship Utilization Plans
Promotion of Joint Training Center for Future Marine Mobility Talent Development
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Ulsan City will hold an onboard meeting with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries at 2 p.m. on the 26th on the ‘Ulsan Taehwaho’ to discuss the promotion of a joint training center for marine mobility talent development.
About 20 people, including officials from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Ulsan City, Korea Maritime and Ocean University Training Institute, Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency, Ship and Offshore Plant Research Institute, Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, KSS Shipping, and Humax Mobility, will attend the meeting. They will discuss cooperation and promotion plans for the establishment and operation of a future marine mobility talent development joint training center.
The main agenda items include ▲smart ship and equipment operation practice (Ulsan Information Industry Promotion Agency) ▲electric propulsion ship safety demonstration and explosion-proof facility certification training (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering) ▲autonomous ship test ship demonstration and navigation simulation training (Ship and Offshore Plant Research Institute) ▲port safety and communication equipment inspection and certification training (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute).
Ulsan City plans to explain measures for fostering future talent using the research hub development plans of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Ministry of Science and ICT in the Goneul district of Dong-gu, Ulsan, as well as the specialized facilities and equipment of shipbuilding and shipping innovation institutions, and to request active support from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to listen to the marine mobility talent development plans linked to the facilities and equipment of innovation institutions already established in Ulsan through this meeting and review future promotion plans.
An official from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said, “It is meaningful to have a chance to listen to and discuss the status of marine mobility talent development with local innovation institutions, shipping companies, and specialized enterprises,” and added, “We will consider commercializing Ulsan City’s talent development plan.”
The Ulsan Taehwaho is Korea’s first ICT convergence direct current-based electric propulsion smart ship, built with an investment of 44.8 billion KRW by Ulsan City and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
More than 90% of the equipment developed with domestic technology, such as smart navigation, is applied, and it will be used for multiple purposes such as demonstration performance testbed, education, research, and marine tourism.

The ship has a capacity of 300 passengers, a maximum operating speed of 16 knots, and weighs 2,700 tons.
