80% of Porsche Customers Choose the 'Big Car'
Last Year, 309,884 Units Sold Worldwide
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] German luxury brand Porsche announced on the 13th that it delivered 309,884 vehicles to customers worldwide last year. This is a 3% increase compared to 301,915 units in 2021, setting a new sales record once again.
Although the brand is famous for its small and agile sports cars, more than 80% of sales were from so-called ‘big cars’ such as sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and large sedans. The mid-large SUV Cayenne was the best-selling model with 95,604 units sold.
The mid-size SUV Macan followed with 86,724 units sold. The Panamera sold 34,142 units, a 13% increase from the previous year, showing growth well above the overall average. The electric vehicle Taycan sold 34,801 units. Both the Panamera and Taycan are 4-door sedans and are considered big cars alongside SUVs within Porsche.
By region, 62,685 units were sold in Europe, 79,260 in North America, and 93,286 in China. Sales were also strong in South Korea. According to the Korea Imported Automobile Association, 8,963 units were sold last year, a 6% increase from the previous year. This ranks eighth among imported car brands based on association member companies, outselling many popular mass-market brands.
Even the cheapest Macan costs over 100 million KRW, with some models priced in the hundreds of millions per unit, yet sales have steadily increased for several years. The best-selling model in South Korea is also the Cayenne, with 4,102 units sold.
The preference for larger vehicles like SUVs has increased similarly among other luxury brands. Italian brand Lamborghini also set a record last year with 9,233 units sold, with the SUV Urus being the best-selling model. The Urus accounted for nearly 60% of total sales with 5,367 units sold.
British brand Rolls-Royce’s best-selling model worldwide is also the large SUV Cullinan. It is relatively affordable among Rolls-Royce models in South Korea, priced at 474.6 million KRW.
