'AI-Centered City Ambition' Gwangju City Anticipates Innovation Partnership with Google
Mayor Kang Gijeong and Others Visit Google Headquarters to Explore Cooperation Measures

According to Gwangju City on the 11th, Mayor Kang Gi-jung and the Gwangju delegation visited Google's headquarters located in Silicon Valley, USA, on the 9th (local time) to share digital industry trends and prospects from the perspective of a global advanced technology company and to explore cooperation plans.
The meeting was attended by 15 people including Jeong Moo-chang, Chairman of the Gwangju City Council, city council members, Kim Kwang-jin, Vice Mayor of Culture and Economy, Kim Young-jip, Director of Gwangju Technopark, Jeong Seong-taek, President of Chonnam National University, Min Jeong-jun, Director of Industry-Academic Cooperation, and Lee Jeong-kwon, Chairman of DH Global.
At Google's headquarters, Sepi Hejazi Moghadam, Senior Team Leader of External Cooperation and Research Division, and Manager Park Min-jae attended.
Paul Wilson, Head of Asia-Pacific Public Sector, sent a video message.
On this day, Google proposed a collaboration model related to artificial intelligence to Gwangju City and opened discussions on AI talent development and other topics.
Paul Wilson suggested continuing specific conversations in the future along with an invitation to the Google Korea Campus.
Gwangju City and Google agreed on the importance of efficient integrated management of data. They emphasized that data, which had been managed individually, should be managed integrally with certain rules so that anyone can easily use the data.
Mayor Kang stressed the necessity of establishing data-driven policies through efficient data management and exchanged opinions on AI security and ethical issues.
Paul Wilson, Head of Asia-Pacific Public Sector, said, “Mayor Kang’s duty and responsibility to citizens are very important,” adding, “I am impressed by Gwangju’s perspective on AI as well as its focus on embracing AI. I hope we can get to know each other better regarding AI technology and capabilities at the Google Korea Campus in Seoul.”

Mayor Kang stated, “Google is definitely a partner that Gwangju, aspiring to be an AI-centered city, must meet and work with. Google showed great interest in AI data centers and talent development,” and added, “Going forward, through concrete consultations with Google Cloud Korea, local governments, universities, and Google will join forces to complete the ladder for nurturing AI talent.”
