Hyundai Motor Group Wins Multiple Awards at the 2022 Good Design Awards in the USA
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 11th that it received awards in the Transportation Design and Robotics Design categories at the prestigious and traditional American design award, the ‘2022 Good Design Award.’
The American Good Design Award is selected through a collaboration between the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies. Each year, it announces winners in various categories for products from Fortune 500 companies, including electronics, transportation, furniture, and robotics.
Hyundai Motor won in the 2022 Good Design Award Transportation Design category with ▲Trailer Drone ▲SEVEN concept. In the Robotics Design category, ▲PnD (Plug & Drive) Mobility ▲L7 ▲MobED were awarded, totaling five selected products.
The new-concept hydrogen mobility ‘Trailer Drone’ added significance by being selected for the Good Design Award following its grand prize win in the design concept category at the 2022 Red Dot Award. The ‘SEVEN,’ a vision concept for a large SUV electric vehicle, features a single curve extending from the low hood front to the roof and a long wheelbase, creating a distinctive proportion alongside typical SUV design.
PnD Mobility and L7 are based on the future mobility solution PnD module. The PnD module is characterized by integrating an in-wheel motor, steering, suspension, brake system, and environmental perception sensors into a single structure. Additionally, ‘MobED’ is a new-concept compact mobility utilizing DnL (Drift and Lift). It can maintain the vehicle body’s horizontal position even on tilted roads or uneven surfaces, and with a large steering angle and adjustable wheelbase, it offers excellent mobility in narrow and complex urban environments.
Kia had four selections in the Transportation Design category: ▲Niro ▲EV9 concept ▲Magenta design infotainment system ▲Electric vehicle dedicated infotainment system, winning across mass-produced vehicles, concept designs, and software designs.
The eco-friendly SUV ‘Niro,’ launched in January last year, reflects Kia’s design philosophy of Opposites United (creative fusion of contrasting concepts) and one of its attributes, ‘reasoned joyful experience,’ completing an original yet sophisticated design.
The ‘EV9 concept’ applied a sea-colored body representing the element ‘water,’ flooring recycled from discarded fishing nets, and seats and door trims made from fabric recycled from plastic bottles. It embodies Kia’s commitment to a sustainable mobility society. Kia’s flagship electrified SUV EV9 is scheduled for release in the first half of this year.
Kia’s ‘Magenta design infotainment system’ and ‘electric vehicle dedicated infotainment system’ were also listed among the winners. The infotainment system optimized for vehicle displays, based on the magenta color, emphasizes a seamless connection between the instrument cluster and central display. It offers the world’s first ‘dynamic’ theme, where background images change according to time, weather, and speed.
The electric vehicle dedicated infotainment system implements a smooth black background with a thin and soft feel similar to paper. It boldly removes previously provided information and intuitively displays only essential information needed for electric vehicle operation, enhancing readability.
Genesis won two awards in the Transportation Design category with ▲G90 ▲Genesis ccIC (connected car Integrated Cockpit) infotainment system. This achievement marks Genesis’s eighth consecutive year of winning since the brand’s launch in 2015.
The ‘G90’ features an elegant exterior emphasizing a refined image at the pinnacle of Genesis’s design philosophy of ‘dynamic elegance,’ offering a dignified and sophisticated design. The ‘Genesis ccIC infotainment system,’ selected alongside the vehicle, provides an integrated user experience through organic content linkage among HUD, instrument cluster, and navigation.
