Sacheon-si Launches Crackdown on Seafood Origin Labeling During Lunar New Year Holiday
Focused Inspection on Illegal Distribution for Gifts and Jesuyong (Ancestral Rites Use)
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Sacheon City, Gyeongnam Province, announced on the 9th that it will conduct a special crackdown on origin labeling of sacrificial and gift seafood, which is expected to see a surge in demand ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday.
This special crackdown will be carried out over 12 days from the 9th to the 20th, targeting establishments frequently used by consumers such as large supermarkets, traditional markets, sashimi restaurants, and eateries.
The city formed an inspection team consisting of three employees, including the head of the fisheries guidance team, to focus on origin labeling violations, disguised sales, storage, and display practices, especially concerning sacrificial, gift, and imported seafood.
Those who falsely label the origin face imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine of up to 100 million won, while failure to label the origin results in a fine of up to 10 million won.
In particular, businesses that violate origin false labeling or non-labeling more than twice will have their business names, addresses, disciplinary details, and names of seafood publicly disclosed on the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the National Fishery Products Quality Management Service websites for 12 months.
The special crackdown was established to ensure consumers' right to know through proper and reasonable origin labeling of agricultural and fishery products and their processed goods, creating an environment where consumers can purchase seafood with confidence.
