Session Begins Immediately After December Extraordinary National Assembly Ends
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] The Democratic Party of Korea unilaterally convened the January extraordinary session of the National Assembly on the 6th. Accordingly, the December extraordinary session will end on the 8th, and the January extraordinary session will begin immediately from the 9th.
On the same day, the Democratic Party announced that it had submitted a request to convene the extraordinary session to the National Assembly Secretariat in the afternoon.
The request was signed by Floor Leader Park Hong-geun and all 169 Democratic Party lawmakers.
The Democratic Party explained the reasons for convening the January extraordinary session as ▲urgent handling of livelihood bills ▲urgent questions on security crisis situations such as North Korean drones ▲adoption of a resolution condemning North Korean drone provocations ▲urgent questions on the livelihood and economic crisis ▲adoption of the report on the Yongsan Itaewon disaster national investigation.
According to National Assembly regulations, the January extraordinary session will begin on the 9th after the request is received and a three-day public notice period.
Floor Leader Park said at the lawmakers' meeting, "We cannot neglect the crises in the economy, security, and livelihood," adding, "It is necessary to hold more than two urgent questions in the plenary session targeting ministers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Unification, Ministry of National Defense, and the resolution condemning North Korea demanded by the People Power Party can only be processed by opening a plenary session."
He also emphasized, "Ministers of economic departments such as the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy should be summoned to review the current economic crisis situation and devise countermeasures," and "It is urgent for the standing committees of the National Assembly to receive reports from each ministry."
The National Defense Committee is expected to hold a hearing on the intrusion of North Korean drones into the no-fly zone, and the Political Affairs Committee will address risks related to real estate project financing and household debt issues such as high interest rates.
