Daejeon City Expands Residential Area Gardens in Galma, Doan, and Gwanjeo-dong
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City is expanding living area gardens in Galma, Doan, and Gwanjeo-dong.
On the 6th, the city announced that five sites in the Seo-gu area, including Galma, Doan, and Gwanjeo-dong, were finally selected as target locations for the Korea Forest Service’s 2023 Garden Dream Project (Garden Field Practice and Nurturing Space Creation Project).
The Korea Forest Service received participation applications from a total of 12 metropolitan local governments through the public contest. Among them, five local governments, including Daejeon, were included in the project. According to the selection results, the city will receive 380 million KRW in national funding.
The project has been implemented since 2020 with the purpose of cultivating on-site capabilities of garden-related majors and expanding garden infrastructure.
The Korea National Arboretum manages the overall project and monitoring, while local governments provide idle land, perform post-maintenance, recruit citizen gardeners, and divide roles accordingly.
The core of this project is for university students majoring in garden-related fields and youth seeking employment or entrepreneurship to form teams and create practice gardens by designing, planning, and constructing gardens on idle land provided by local governments under the mentoring of garden artists.
The city plans to recruit participating teams and regional executing organizations by the end of April, provide education to the teams, and begin creating practice gardens from June.
After creation, students and local residents will lead the garden management.
