Suseo-bound SRT to Run in Gyeongnam as Well... Scheduled for Operation in the Second Half of This Year
2-Hour Travel Time Between Gangnam, Seoul and Southeastern Gyeonggi Region
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] “In preparation for the operation of the Suseo-bound high-speed train in the second half of the year, we will continue to consult with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport regarding the number of Suseo-bound high-speed train services and their operating time slots.”
Park Wan-su, Governor of Gyeongnam Province, made this statement on the 3rd following the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s decision to newly operate the Gyeongjeon Line Suseo-bound high-speed train.
On the 3rd of this month, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced in its major business promotion plan report that “the direct high-speed train service on the Gyeongjeon Line to Suseo will be expanded within the second half of this year.”
At a meeting of the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee on December 29 last year, the ministry also expressed its intention to expand the operation of the Suseo-originating high-speed train (SRT) by cooperating with railway-related organizations to extend the high-speed rail beneficiary areas to Changwon, Jinju, Pohang, and Yeosu.
According to Gyeongnam Province, the Suseo-bound high-speed train SRT has operated only on the Gyeongbu Line and Honam Line since its opening in 2016.
For residents in the Gyeongnam region, which belongs to the Gyeongjeon Line, traveling to Seoul Gangnam or southeastern Gyeonggi by train required transferring to the SRT at Dongdaegu Station or taking the KTX and then getting off at Gwangmyeong Station or Seoul Station to travel an additional hour by bus or subway.
The province continuously proposed the establishment of a new Gyeongjeon Line Suseo-bound high-speed train service from 2017 to 2022, and as a result of Governor Park’s request at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport-Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam regional development cooperation meeting last December, the decision to operate the Gyeongjeon Line Suseo-bound high-speed train in the second half of this year was secured.
