Kyobo Art Space, 3-Person Curated Exhibition 'White Space, Black Line'
Exploring the Essence of Painting Through Brush and Pencil Movements
Free Viewing at Kyobo Bookstore Gwanghwamun Branch
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] Kyobo Bookstore's exhibition space, Kyobo Art Space, is holding its first exhibition of the year, a three-person curated exhibition titled "White Blank, Black Line" featuring artists Kim Seondu, Kim Eunju, and Jeong Yongguk. Through works showcasing the harmony of black and white and traditional techniques, the exhibition approaches the essence of Eastern painting.
Artists Kim Seondu, Kim Eunju, and Jeong Yongguk are mid-career artists who have long explored the characteristics of "brush and ink" and "pencil," answering fundamental questions about painting. Their work is characterized by meticulously depicting ordinary subjects with black lines.
Kim Seondu expands the themes of his paintings by finding motifs in various modern and contemporary literary works, in addition to landscapes and portraits. He succinctly presents the unique imagery that can be created through simple lines in painting.
Kim Eunju has long drawn black-and-white flowers and landscapes with pencil. She has developed and expanded pencil work, often regarded as unfinished drawings, elevating it into her own painting genre.
Jeong Yongguk has explored materials that create black-and-white expressions such as ink, charcoal powder, and graphite powder, presenting diverse works. Especially notable in this exhibition is the "Rootless Tree" series, a long-developed work by the artist featuring forms that overlap plants and body organs.
Choi Heejin, director of Kyobo Art Space, stated, "This 'White Blank, Black Line' exhibition will be an opportunity to newly experience the essence of visual language conveyed by black and white, line and surface, blank space and filling, as we face black-and-white painting works."
