Pohang City Holds New Year's Visit to Pray for a Greater Leap into the Future

The New Year’s Tribute is a meaningful first event of the year where heads of various institutions and organizations, including the mayor, pay respects to the patriotic martyrs and war heroes at the start of the new year and pledge to carry out proper city administration for the citizens.
About 200 people attended the event, including Mayor Lee Kang-deok, City Council Chairman Baek In-gyu, National Assembly members Kim Jeong-jae and Kim Byeong-wook, city and provincial council members, military unit commanders, heads of veterans’ organizations, and leaders of various institutions and organizations, to honor the noble spirits of the patriotic martyrs and war heroes who sacrificed for the country and nation, and to pray for the development of city administration and the safety and happiness of the citizens in the new year.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “I deeply thank the citizens, businesses, and organizations who participated in the rapid recovery during the unprecedented typhoon damage crisis last year,” and added, “I ask everyone to join forces so that Pohang City, together with its great citizens who overcame difficulties, can lead the Republic of Korea and make a greater leap into the future.”

The Pohang City Memorial Tower is a sacred place enshrining the spirits of 2,789 patriots, including Pohang-born soldiers who died for the country, independence activists, veterans, and war casualties. It was built in May 1964 and renovated in 2013 to update the aging facilities.
