Casualties Follow Consecutive Heavy Snowfalls in Japan
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunju Lee] Heavy snowfall centered around the Sea of Japan is causing continuous casualties.
According to NHK and others on the 24th, heavy snowfall is occurring mainly in regional areas of Japan. This is due to the influence of a winter pressure pattern with strong cold air flowing into northern and western Japan airspace.
Reports indicate that by the morning of the day, 97 cm of snow fell in Oguni-machi, Yamagata Prefecture, and 81 cm in Sekikawa-mura, Niigata Prefecture.
According to the Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency, as of 4 p.m. on the 23rd, 9 people have died and 48 have been injured due to the heavy snowfall. Fatal accidents occurred continuously, including deaths during snow removal work and being buried in snow in front of homes. Transportation disruptions continue, such as flight cancellations due to the heavy snowfall.
