[Weather] Nationwide Cold Wave Until Weekend... Heavy Snow Warning for Southern Regions
[Asia Economy Reporter Seong Giho] On Friday the 23rd, amid a nationwide cold wave, heavy snowfall is occurring mainly in the Chungcheong region, Jeolla region, and Jeju Island.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 9 a.m. that day, the snowfall amounts were 33.7 cm in Seocheon, Chungcheong Province, 22.0 cm in Sejong Jeonui, 10.9 cm in Cheongju, 10.1 cm in Boeun, 7.5 cm in Cheonan, and 2.0 cm in Hongseong.
In Jeolla Province, 55.2 cm fell in Gangjin-myeon, Imsil, 51.4 cm in Bokheung, Sunchang, 32.7 cm in Jeongeup, 25.4 cm in Gunsan, 24.7 cm in Damyang, 22.7 cm in Gwangju, and 14.4 cm in Jeonju. In Gyeongsang Province, 2.4 cm accumulated on Ulleungdo. Especially on Jeju Island, 77.5 cm fell at Sajeobi (mountain area), 70.0 cm at Samgakbong (mountain area), 27.5 cm in Seogwipo Jeju Gashiri, 5.3 cm in Jungmun, 3.7 cm in Seogwipo, and 2.7 cm in Jeju City.
The morning low temperatures were forecasted to be between -19 and -3 degrees Celsius, and the daytime highs between -12 and 1 degrees Celsius. The perceived daytime temperatures in most areas nationwide, including the Seoul metropolitan area, are expected to drop below -10 degrees Celsius, indicating severe cold. The expected afternoon wind chill in Seoul is -17 degrees Celsius. As the fallen snow freezes, many roads will become icy, so caution is advised.
On Christmas Eve, Saturday the 24th, the nation is expected to be mostly clear with the cold wave continuing.
The morning low temperatures are forecasted between -20 and -2 degrees Celsius, and daytime highs between -4 and 7 degrees Celsius. Seoul’s morning temperature is expected to drop to -13 degrees Celsius. The Chungnam region, Jeolla region, and Jeju Island are expected to have mostly cloudy skies.

Expected snowfall amounts are 5 to 15 cm along the southern West Coast of Chungnam, Jeolla region (excluding the eastern southern coast of Jeonnam), mid-mountain areas of Jeju Island, and Dokdo; 2 to 8 cm in Chungnam (excluding the southern West Coast and southeastern inland), central Chungbuk, and Jeju Island (excluding mid-mountain areas); and 1 to 5 cm in southeastern inland Chungnam, southern Chungbuk, eastern southern coast of Jeonnam, and western inland Gyeongsang. Due to the ongoing cold wave and heavy snow, significant damage may occur, so preparations are necessary.
