View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] On the 21st, Boryeong held a board meeting and announced that it had decided to make a strategic investment of 50 million USD (approximately 64.9 billion KRW) in Axiom Space, the world’s first private commercial space station leading company headquartered in Houston, USA. This is the second investment following an earlier investment of 10 million USD (approximately 12.9 billion KRW) made earlier this year.
Earlier this year, Boryeong announced the CIS (Care In Space) project under the vision of seeking new business opportunities related to ‘space healthcare.’ As a first step, since April, Boryeong has been conducting the CIS Challenge to gather ideas for exploring various healthcare issues in space and seeking commercialization opportunities, in collaboration with global partners in the space industry such as Axiom, NASA, Harvard University, and MIT. Through this strategic investment in Axiom, Boryeong plans to establish a foundation for commercialization in space.
Axiom is constructing the world’s first commercial space station, the Axiom Station. It is intended to replace the International Space Station (ISS), which is scheduled to be decommissioned within the next 10 years. Axiom plans to launch the first module by the end of 2025. Subsequently, three additional modules will be added to complete an independently operating space station in low Earth orbit. The establishment of the Axiom Station is expected to be a significant turning point in the transition to a private-led space development era in low Earth orbit.
In addition, in April, Axiom conducted various scientific research and experiments through the ‘Ax-1’ project, the first private astronaut mission based on the existing ISS. This project is advancing private-led growth in low Earth orbit. Recently, Axiom has signed multiple contracts and agreements with countries not included in the ISS program that are planning astronaut missions or conducting microgravity research.
Boryeong’s investment in Axiom is significant in that it secures a core investor position in the private space station business, which will be a major stage beyond the existing ISS in the new space era. It aims to establish a space infrastructure-based business ecosystem that can proactively lead the CIS initiative based on space and create a foundation to explore new business opportunities in space.
