SK Corp. Showcases 'Carbon Neutral Technologies' Including SMR and Electric Vehicle Chargers at CES
Introduction to SK Inc.'s Net Zero Value Chain Featuring Carbon Emission Reduction, Eco-Friendly, and Energy-Saving Technologies
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] Investment specialist SK Inc. will present the future transformed by carbon-neutral technology at 'CES 2023,' held in Las Vegas, USA, in January next year.
The SK Group integrated exhibition hall, in which SK Inc. participates, is themed "Action (Together, Further, Moving Toward a Carbon-Free Future)" and is designed so that visitors can directly experience and empathize with how SK Group's net-zero technologies are applied in daily life and bring about change.
Through CES, SK Inc. plans to showcase eco-friendly and energy-saving technologies that reduce carbon emissions across the entire energy lifecycle from production to consumption, as well as net-zero technologies that will soon be experienced in everyday life.
These net-zero technologies are next-generation technologies owned by domestic and international companies invested in by SK Inc., allowing visitors to directly experience the future vision of the eco-friendly industry envisioned by the investment specialist SK Inc.
First, TerraPower's next-generation reactor, the Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR), has an output scale of 345 megawatts (MW) and adopts a natural circulation safety system, with energy storage capability. This can complement the intermittency of renewable energy and, together with Small Modular Reactors (SMR), is expected to be a carbon-free power source replacing coal-fired power generation.
Next, SK Inc. will introduce technologies that significantly reduce carbon emissions at the energy consumption stage, including ▲ SK Signet's ultra-fast electric vehicle chargers ▲ Atom Power's electric vehicle chargers and Solid State Circuit Breakers (SSCB) ▲ Halio's smart glass ▲ Teraon’s nano-carbon heating films.
SK Signet's ultra-fast electric vehicle charger boasts a charging speed about seven times faster than the currently commercialized 50-kilowatt (kW) rapid chargers, with a capacity of over 350 kW. The charger applies the latest technology, Plug & Charge, enabling automatic user authentication, charging, and payment simply by plugging into the vehicle. This technology is expected to greatly improve the convenience of electric vehicle charging and contribute to the spread of eco-friendly electric vehicles.
Atom Power's SSCB, unlike general circuit breakers, uses a self-developed power semiconductor-based high-speed circuit breaker and software to acquire power data and predict power consumption patterns. SSCB is regarded as a key technology necessary to maximize the efficiency of the energy market by adjusting power production.
Halio's smart glass also draws attention. Smart glass is glass that can adjust color and transparency through electrical operation, darkening the glass to block light and heat via manual and automatic controls. Using smart glass can reduce energy consumption for heating and cooling by about 20% annually compared to regular glass.
Teraon introduces nano-carbon heating films. These films are innovative materials with enhanced efficiency, capable of continuous use at high temperatures above 250°C. Their high flexibility reduces design constraints, allowing expansion into electric vehicles as well as architecture and home appliances. When applied for interior heating in electric vehicles, it can reduce heating power through radiant heating, extend driving range, and provide comfortable warmth without dryness.
Additionally, SK Inc., which continues to invest in the sustainable food sector based on innovative technologies, will operate a ‘Sustainable Food Food Truck’ at the Central Plaza outside the exhibition hall, offering various eco-friendly foods such as ‘SK-Bingsu (Sustainable Korea Bingsu)’ using alternative dairy protein from Perfect Day and alternative protein cream cheese from Nature’s Fynd.
