[2023 Regular Admission] Hankuk University of Foreign Studies to Select 1,545 Students in Regular Admission... Establishment of Global Liberal Arts Department
[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] Hankuk University of Foreign Studies will select 1,545 students in the 2023 academic year regular admission. This accounts for 43.2% of the total number of recruits.
HUFS will accept applications for regular admission from December 30 to January 2. The number of recruits is 1,360 for the general admission within the quota and 185 for special admissions outside the quota (students from farming and fishing villages, basic livelihood security recipients, and lower-income groups).
By group, the general admission will select 267 students in Group A (Seoul Campus 201, Global Campus 66), 654 students in Group B (Seoul Campus 401, Global Campus 253), and 439 students in Group C (Seoul Campus 64, Global Campus 375). For the special admission for students from farming and fishing villages, 67 students in Group B and 68 students in Group C will be selected. For the special admission for basic livelihood security recipients and lower-income groups, 25 students in Group B and 25 students in Group C will be selected.
HUFS selects freshmen solely based on CSAT scores in all admission types. Notably, to simplify the admission process and reduce preparation burdens, both the general admission and the special admissions outside the quota (students from farming and fishing villages, basic livelihood security recipients, and lower-income groups) select students 100% based on CSAT scores.
Additionally, no specific elective subjects are designated according to the recruitment unit's category. Therefore, examinees can apply to all recruitment units in both humanities and natural sciences without restrictions on choosing Probability and Statistics, Calculus, or Geometry in the Mathematics section, and Social Studies or Science in the Inquiry section.
Among the general admission humanities recruitment units, the weighting of the Mathematics section has increased compared to last year, while the weighting of the English section has decreased. The ELLT Department, College of Social Sciences, College of Business, College of Management, School of International Studies, LD Department, LT Department at the Seoul Campus, and the College of Economics and Business, College of Convergence Talent, and Department of Global Sports Industry at the Global Campus reflect Korean 30%, Mathematics 35%, English 15%, and Inquiry 20% (2 subjects). Other humanities recruitment units reflect Korean 30%, Mathematics 30%, English 20%, and Inquiry 20% (2 subjects). The natural sciences reflect Korean 20%, Mathematics 35%, English 15%, and Inquiry 30%.
All humanities and natural sciences recruitment units use standard scores for Korean and Mathematics sections, converted scores by grade for the English section, and HUFS's own converted standard scores for the Inquiry section, summing the top two subjects. However, since the second foreign language and Classical Chinese have been converted to absolute evaluation, they cannot be substituted for one subject in the Social Studies Inquiry section, so applicants should be cautious.
Korean History is applied as additional points only for the humanities, while for natural sciences it is processed as Pass/Fail depending on whether the exam was taken. The additional points by Korean History grade are 10 points for grades 1 to 3, 9.8 points for grade 4, 9.6 points for grade 5, 9.4 points for grade 6, 9.2 points for grade 7, 9 points for grade 8, and 8 points for grade 9.

Meanwhile, according to the specialized development strategy by campus, the Global Liberal Arts Department has been newly established at the Global Campus and will select freshmen starting this year. Accordingly, the Global Campus's College of Interpretation and Translation's English, Chinese, Japanese, and Thai Interpretation and Translation Departments, and the School of International Area Studies' French, Brazilian, Indian, and Russian Departments have stopped recruiting freshmen, and the admission quota secured through this has been allocated to the Global Liberal Arts Department. The Global Liberal Arts Department selects students divided into humanities and natural sciences, but after admission, students study a convergent curriculum without division for the first year and choose their major upon entering the second year.
