Volkswagen A6, Tesla Model Y and 50,452 Other Vehicles Recalled for Manufacturing Defects
[Asia Economy Reporter Noh Kyung-jo] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 15th that a total of 68 vehicle models, 50,452 units, manufactured or imported and sold by Volkswagen Group Korea, Tesla Korea, and Hyundai Motor Company have been found to have manufacturing defects and will be subject to voluntary corrective actions (recalls).
Among them, 61 models including the A6 45 TFSI Premium imported and sold by Volkswagen Group Korea, totaling 23,141 units (including pre-sale vehicles), were found to have a safety standard non-compliance issue due to a rear camera software error that causes the video not to display properly when reversing. The importer will conduct the recall voluntarily and plans to impose fines later considering the correction rate.
For 4 models including the Q5 45 TFSI qu. Premium, totaling 1,018 units (including pre-sale vehicles), metal foreign substances generated due to defective processing of the connecting rod cause bearing damage, which may lead to engine failure. Free repairs (software updates, etc.) can be received at Volkswagen Group Korea official service centers from the 19th and 16th respectively.
Tesla Korea imported and sold 13,210 units of Model Y, which were found to have intermittent rear light failures due to software errors, raising concerns about potential accidents. For 12,891 units of Model 3, a design error in the rear camera cable routing causes cable wear when repeatedly opening and closing the trunk, which may result in the rear camera video not displaying on the screen, potentially causing accidents. Therefore, a voluntary recall has been initiated.
Model Y will receive remote automatic updates with improved software starting from the 16th, and Model 3 is undergoing free repairs (inspection and replacement) at Tesla Korea official service centers since the 13th.
Hyundai Motor Company’s 192 units of County Electric were judged to have safety risks due to parking brake cable wear caused by insufficient durability. These vehicles can be repaired free of charge (replacement with improved parts) at Hyundai Motor High-Tech Center and Blue Hands from the 19th.
Each manufacturer will notify vehicle owners of the recall procedures via mail and mobile text messages. Vehicle owners who have already repaired the defects at their own expense can apply for reimbursement.
