36 Small and Medium Cities Including Jeonju and Jeju, BRT Development Promotion
Amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the BRT System Act Passed at Cabinet Meeting
To Be Applied from the 11th of Next Month
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Wanyong] In the future, the establishment of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems will be activated in small and medium-sized cities with populations of over 100,000. Additionally, a substitute penalty system will be introduced for BRT bus operators.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 29th that the amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System Act was approved at the Cabinet meeting. This amendment is a follow-up measure to the Bus Rapid Transit System Act amendment (expanding the regional scope of BRT, introducing the substitute penalty system, etc.) promulgated on June 10.
With this enforcement decree in place, a total of 36 additional regions, including Cheonan, Jeonju, and Jeju, small and medium-sized cities with populations over 100,000, will be able to establish BRT systems.
Furthermore, if a BRT operator commits a violation warranting suspension of business, the substitute penalty system (imposing a fine of 1.8 million KRW per violation detected) will be applied to prevent disruptions in BRT operations.
The substitute penalty is a system that allows imposing a monetary fine instead of administrative sanctions such as business suspension for violations of laws by operators. The amendment will take effect from the 11th of next month.
