Jeju Island to Introduce 'Intelligent Vehicle License Plate Recognition Solution' Starting Next Month
Automatic License Plate Recognition for 3,300 CCTV Cameras in Major Alleyways
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 14th that it plans to introduce an ‘Intelligent Vehicle License Plate Recognition Solution’ to prevent crimes and incidents in alleyways and will pilot operate it from next month.
The intelligent vehicle license plate recognition solution applies an intelligent vehicle license plate search system to the currently operated security closed-circuit television (CCTV) without separately installing cameras dedicated to vehicle license plate recognition, enabling real-time recognition and search of vehicle license plates.
When a police station requests a search for wanted vehicles, the alleyway CCTV is operated in real time to capture the problematic vehicle, and the vehicle’s number and location information are automatically displayed in the control situation room.
Through this, vehicle location information can be quickly provided to the police station, helping to resolve incidents and accidents.
Jeju Province has so far used 235 dedicated vehicle license plate recognition cameras based on vehicle detection sensor methods on main roads, but the operation of CCTVs capable of recognizing vehicle license plates was limited, making it difficult to check movement routes outside main roads.
Also, dedicated vehicle license plate recognition cameras require purchase and installation costs, so the number that can be installed relative to the budget input was not large, limiting expansion.
With this project, vehicle license plate recognition and vehicle search are possible using existing cameras without installation construction costs, enabling a more detailed safety net by identifying movement routes of wanted vehicles and agricultural crime vehicles on side roads and alleyways outside main roads.
Among the 3,300 CCTVs installed and operated for security purposes in the province, through collaboration with the National Police Agency during the selection process, the system was applied to 43 high-crime areas and 71 locations with frequent traffic accidents and habitual violations, supporting crime prevention and security activities as well as incident handling involving vehicles.
Jeju Province plans to actively utilize this system for local tax collection tasks such as searching for illegal unregistered vehicles and seizing delinquent vehicles through consultations with related agencies and departments.
Meanwhile, Jeju Province was selected for the ‘AI Technology-Based Missing Person Tracking Technology Development Project’ (2022-2023) hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT (Information and Communication Industry Promotion Agency) this year and is currently promoting it. If the technology development is successful, it is expected to be a revolutionary turning point in missing person searches.
