[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] Joo Ho-young, floor leader of the People Power Party, expressed on the 10th that he would not participate in the formation of a special committee (special committee) for the Itaewon disaster state audit.
After a party meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Joo told reporters in response to the question, "The special committee for the state audit will be formed, but will you participate in the follow-up discussions?" “That is my current position,” he said. This drew a line against some expectations that the People Power Party would participate in the state audit to counter the opposition's offensive.
In his opening remarks, he also said, “The truth of the (Itaewon disaster) can be revealed through an investigation by the police special investigation headquarters using coercive power, and the state audit method has no coercive power, so it will only lead to political strife and shouting,” adding, “I think South Korea’s way of dealing with social disasters should not repeat this method.” He maintained his stance against the state audit.
He continued, “Isn't it that the person working in their position neglected their duty, which led to a major accident?” and pointed out, “If the Yongsan District Office and Yongsan Police Station had been a little more careful and cautious, this major accident could have been prevented.”
Jung Jin-seok, chairman of the People Power Party’s Emergency Response Committee, also said, “The government is facing an unprecedented situation and is conducting a thorough investigation to ensure there is no suspicion among the people,” adding, “It is appropriate to slowly proceed with asking about responsibility based on such results.”

Jung also criticized the Democratic Party, saying, “It seems that they intend to politicize and amplify the Itaewon accident in any way,” and claimed, “Isn't this ultimately a reality where all political issues are gathered to protect that person from Daejang-dong (Lee Jae-myung) and shield (Representative Lee Jae-myung)?”
