[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Park Ilha) has secured a project budget of 5.2 billion KRW as Seongdae Traditional Market was selected for the 2023 ‘Green New Deal Undergrounding Project’ hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The ‘Green New Deal Undergrounding’ project involves removing utility poles and burying tangled electrical wires and various communication lines underground like a spider web.
The selected site this time covers the Seongdae Traditional Market area, spanning a total of 1,310 meters in both directions from Dongjak Kyunghee Hospital to Sindaebang Samgeori Station. The plan is to demolish 66 utility poles and underground the overhead lines, aiming for completion in 2025.
Additionally, the district has been progressively implementing undergrounding projects since 2020 to improve urban aesthetics and create a safe walking environment by burying 151 utility poles underground along four major arterial roads and school routes totaling 4,370 meters.
The project sections include ▲ Sangdo Station to Sangdo 2-dong Community Center ▲ Sangdo 2-dong Community Center to Dongjak Kyunghee Hospital ▲ Sinnamseong Elementary School to Solbat-ro Entrance ▲ Chungdae University Affiliated Elementary School to Heukseok Daycare vicinity.
The section from ‘Sangdo Station to Sangdo 2-dong Community Center’ is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, while the sections from ‘Sangdo 2-dong Community Center to Dongjak Kyunghee Hospital’ and ‘Sinnamseong Elementary School to Solbat-ro Entrance’ are targeted for 2023 completion, and the ‘Chungdae University Affiliated Elementary School to Heukseok Daycare’ section aims for completion in 2024.
Park Ilha, Mayor of Dongjak-gu, stated, “With this project selection, we will create a safe walking environment in Seongdae Traditional Market and resolve inconveniences for users.” He added, “We will continue to promote undergrounding projects to make Dongjak a pleasant and safe place.”
Gangnam-gu (Mayor Cho Sungmyung) is operating a comprehensive wildfire prevention headquarters for 45 days from the 1st of this month to December 15th to minimize the occurrence of wildfires during the autumn season.
As the risk of wildfires increases due to dry weather, the district has fully activated the wildfire prevention headquarters and completed inspections of over 2,500 firefighting equipment items such as backpack pumps and rakes.
In addition, eight vulnerable wildfire areas (Gaeam, Yongducheon, Ssangbong Springs, around Daemosan Nature Learning Center, the back mountains of Guryong, Motgol, and Eungok villages, and Daltuh Neighborhood Park) have been selected for 24-hour emergency duty operations.
Staff from management offices in these vulnerable areas conduct regular patrols, night emergency duties, and intensive monitoring while maintaining close cooperation with related agencies such as the Korea Forest Service and fire stations.
Furthermore, wildfire prevention campaigns are being conducted to prevent wildfires caused by negligence such as careless fires by visitors and to raise awareness.
Meanwhile, to establish a scientific wildfire prevention system, thermal imaging CCTVs will be installed by December 15th. After drone site surveys around Daemosan and Guryongsan, four locations offering a full view of the mountains will be selected to install a total of nine CCTVs.
Unlike existing surveillance cameras, thermal imaging CCTVs are equipped with sensors that automatically detect wildfire flames and smoke, enabling early detection of fire outbreaks. When a fire occurs, the system immediately notifies the wildfire prevention headquarters staff and sends wildfire footage and messages, allowing rapid deployment of firefighting personnel and equipment to the scene. This is expected to enable more proactive monitoring compared to the current passive visual monitoring and reporting system.
