This was the first time a Pallium conferral ceremony was held at a Korean cathedral.
The Mass was attended by Archbishop Alfred Xuereb, the Apostolic Nuncio to Korea; Cardinal Yeom Sujeong; Bishop Lee Yonghoon, Chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea; Archbishop Choi Changmoo, former Archbishop of Gwangju; the episcopal council; diocesan priests; superiors of religious orders in the metropolitan area; the Council of Lay Organizations; poet Shin Dalja; Seoul Catholic Social Welfare Society ambassador actor Jung Ilwoo; actors Yang Mikyung; soprano Lim Sunhye; Lee Baekman, President of the Korea Broadcast Advertising Corporation; Kim Seungwol, Executive Director of the Signis World Assembly; and about 900 others.
Archbishop Alfred Xuereb conveyed Pope Francis's blessing during the Pallium conferral ceremony following the opening rite. He said, “I pray that this Pallium will be a symbol of unity and communion between the Archbishop and the Apostolic See, and I ask the Lord that through this Pallium, the Archbishop may be strengthened and more deeply united with Christ in love.”
In his homily, Archbishop Jeong Suntak expressed special thanks to Archbishop Alfred Xuereb, the episcopal council, Cardinal Yeom Sujeong, and all attendees. He emphasized, “The Pallium is not my personal possession but belongs to the metropolitan see. Spiritually, I believe it reminds us of the Church’s command to ‘take up the cross of Christ’ and the pastoral duty to personally care for the weak and marginalized sheep.”
Following the Pallium conferral Mass, Bishop Lee Yonghoon, Chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea, delivered a congratulatory address. Bishop Lee prayed, “May the Lord’s grace be abundant upon Archbishop Jeong, who faithfully carries out the duties received from Christ in unity with the Holy Father.”
In his response, Archbishop Jeong said, “I thank many people and will also humbly pray. I will seek God’s guidance, listen attentively to the words of senior bishops and priests, and walk together on the path God has called me to.”
