[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] An educational program on planning regional tourism products using tourism data and digital technology will be operated as a response measure to population decline.

On the 7th, the Korea Tourism Organization announced that it will conduct an online and offline tourism education course in November in the Gangwon, Jeonnam, and Chungnam regions to explore response measures to population decline through planning regional tourism products using tourism data and digital technology.

The program is designed to nurture future tourism talents in areas experiencing population decline. Participants will be recruited from three locations among nationwide population decline areas: Jeongseon in Gangwon, Sinan in Jeonnam, and Gongju in Chungnam, as well as nearby local government officials, related organizations, and tourism industry workers. These areas were selected considering factors such as the proportion of tourism consumption by outsiders within the region's tourism expenditure and the connection with the organization's projects like the Regional Tourism Organization (DMO).

On the first day, online education will be conducted using YouTube Live and Zoom. Theoretical education will cover understanding the Local Extinction Response Fund project, data-driven tourism policy formulation, and practical training on regional customized tourism status analysis using the Korea Tourism Data Lab.

On the second and third days, offline education will be held by region. Lectures and practical sessions on domestic and international regional tourism product analysis and strategy formulation for responding to population decline will be conducted.

Applications for participation are accepted until the 9th through the tourism workforce portal ‘Gwangwangin’. Approximately 20 participants per region will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis.

Park Younghee, head of the Tourism Future Talent Development Team at the Korea Tourism Organization, said, “The education will be learner-driven and problem-solving oriented, where participants will analyze the actual tourism content and strengths and weaknesses of the respective regions to independently establish customized strategies.” She added, “We plan to actively support by providing utilization guides to help apply the education content in the field and by holding workshops to share best practice cases.”
