View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Bang Je-il] A Brazilian tourist died after an ice slab fell at the entrance of a glacier cave located in Ushuaia, Argentina. According to multiple local media outlets including Clar?n on the 3rd (local time), the accident occurred at the entrance of an ice cave in the Andorra Valley within Tierra del Fuego National Park, the southernmost part of Argentina, where six tourists arrived the previous day.
Some members of the group followed a man who was at the very front. The man at the front walked toward the cave as if nothing was wrong while recording the inside of the cave with his mobile phone. Suddenly, cracks appeared in the ice roof, and a huge chunk fell over the tourists' heads. The man filming them warned his companions to turn back and avoid the falling ice chunk, after which he dropped his camera.
The accident scene was fully recorded on the mobile phone. The footage showing the group panicking and shouting, as well as the video losing focus after the phone was dropped, was quickly shared on social networking services (SNS) and spread rapidly. Due to the danger of the cave, the rescue team composed of experts continued the recovery and identification of the body until the early morning of the 3rd.
Also known as Cueva de Jimbo, this cave is known as a very beautiful cave formed by layers of rock and glacier, but it has been closed to the public since 2021 due to the continuous falling ice fragments and the risk of collapse of the ice slab at the top of the cave.
