Russian Defense Ministry, "Successful SLBM Launch from Latest Nuclear Submarine"... Rising Nuclear Threat in Europe
Launched Near the Arctic Ocean... Simultaneous Pressure on the US and Europe
US Rapidly Deploys Nuclear Submarine to the Strait of Gibraltar Area
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it successfully conducted a test launch of a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) from its newly developed nuclear submarine along the northern coast facing the Arctic Ocean. This is interpreted as a nuclear provocation aimed at simultaneously pressuring the United States across the Arctic Ocean and Europe to the south. In response to Russia's nuclear provocation, the U.S. has rapidly deployed nuclear submarine forces to the Strait of Gibraltar, and the tense standoff over nuclear capabilities between the two countries is expected to continue.
According to TASS news agency on the 3rd (local time), the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that the new nuclear submarine "Generalissimus Suvorov" successfully test-fired the latest SLBM, the "Bulava." According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Bulava missile was launched from the White Sea in the northern Barents Sea region and hit the target area at the Kura firing range on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Far East.
The Suvorov is a Borei-A class submarine, Russia's latest model, which is evaluated to have improved communication and detection equipment and enhanced maneuverability with reduced noise compared to existing nuclear submarines. It is known to be capable of carrying up to 16 Bulava SLBMs, and the Russian military plans to deploy the Suvorov in active service soon following the success of this test firing.
The latest SLBM, the Bulava missile, has a maximum range of 10,000 km and is a multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV) missile capable of carrying up to 10 individually targetable nuclear warheads. It is also equipped with features to evade current missile defense systems (MD), making it a missile force that the United States and Western countries are highly wary of.
The U.S. government is also highly cautious about Russia's disclosure of its nuclear submarine capabilities and the test launch of nuclear missiles, and it is known to have rapidly deployed nuclear submarine forces to the European region. According to CNN, the U.S. Navy announced that the nuclear submarine USS Rhode Island was deployed to the Strait of Gibraltar on an unplanned redeployment mission on the 1st.
